NIB Takes Banking To The Streets
Staff of National Investment Bank Limited, Ghana’s foremost development banking institution, gave new meaning to their slogan “Your Business is Our Business” when they set up business on the streets in front of the Bank’s Head Office. This unusual move, which occurred on the 18th and 19th of October 2012, was part of the Bank’s strategy of promoting its new products and services specifically designed for the SME market.
Hawkers, passers-by, pedestrians and market women alike were baffled by the novel idea and trooped in their numbers to the stand. Customers were able to open savings and current accounts right on the spot and even make deposits into their accounts.
Mr. Kwaku Oppong-Duah, Head of the Bank’s SME Department, intimated that the Bank had plans of regularly undertaking this exercise in all the major market centres not only in the Accra-Tema metropolis but all over the country. He stressed the Bank’s desire to ensure that it caters for the need of all its market women and petty traders. Mr. Oppong-Duah added that National Investment Bank Limited was ready to assist these traders in expanding their businesses by the provision of micro-loans at very attractive rates.
Speaking to some media personnel during the two-day event, Mr. J. N. Halm, the Bank’s head of Customer Service and Public Relations, asserted that assisting small and medium-scale enterprises had always been part of the fabric of NIB. He traced the history of the Bank’s mandate which was to empower local entrepreneurs. He said the Bank was still alive to that responsibility and was prepared to support all categories, even those that are normally shun by other traditional financial institutions.
